I studied law at the State University of Ghent (master’s degree in law). Afterwards I took a postgraduate course "Law & Economics" at the universities of Rotterdam, Ghent and Madrid (European Master in Law and Economics). I have been continuously active as a lawyer since the first of October, 1992.
I am mainly active in civil and criminal law. In the civil law area, I am highly specialized in family law, liabilities, legal matters concerning the building industry, insurance law, and traffic law. I am also particularly interested in judicial law.
I am furthermore proficient in all aspects of a lawyer’s work, from the drafting of advices and conclusions to the actual pleading.
I am a substitute judge in the Court of First Instance in Ghent since 2001. On several occasions I have stood in for a judge in civil and criminal peer sessions. I have repeatedly been the sole judge during witness examinations.
From December 2002 till November 2003, I was a substitute judge in the 10th chamber of the Court of First Instance in Ghent. This chamber hears appeals against judgments of the Civil Police Court.
From September 2005 till December 2005, I was a substitute judge in the 9th chamber of the Court of First Instance in Ghent. This chamber hears appeals against judgments of the District Court (mainly marital difficulties and maintenance claims).
From April 2007 till November 2007, I was a substitute judge in the 19th criminal chamber of the Court of First Instance in Ghent (serious crime).
Since September 2008, I am an occasional incumbent of the 18th Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance in Ghent (appeals against judgments of the Criminal Police Court).
